The UMass Lowell women’s lacrosse team lost a close match to the Furman Paladins, 21-20, in Greenville, South Carolina on March 12. Senior Macy Shultz tied the program’s single-game record with six assists and added a goal for a seven-point performance.
The game was notable for its high offensive output from both teams. The River Hawks set a new team record with 15 assists, surpassing their previous mark of 12 set in 2017. Junior Chloe Bowers scored seven goals, tying for the second-most goals in a single game by a River Hawk. Other key contributors included junior Bronwyn Hilbert with three goals and three assists, junior Emily Dodd with one goal and four assists, redshirt freshman Chiara Pompei with three goals, senior Grace Lydon with two goals and an assist, sophomore Georgia Ruscitti with two goals, and freshman Brienne Brezynskie who added one goal.
Head Coach Lisa Miller said after the game: “Who doesn’t love a good ole fashioned slugfest. Even though we came up on the losing end of this one, I am seeing good progress in terms of confidence and composure. Also, really proud of the way Grace, Macy, and Elsa led and battled. Growth is happening, which is all you can ask for as a coach.”
The match saw both teams trading leads throughout all four quarters. UMass Lowell held advantages at several points but could not hold off Furman’s late surge. The Paladins scored the winning goal on a free position shot as time expired.
UMass Lowell will return home to face Central Michigan on Tuesday, March 17 at Cushing Field in their final non-conference game before league play begins.
