The UMass Lowell women’s lacrosse team earned an 11-10 overtime victory against the UMBC Retrievers on April 11. Senior Grace Lydon led the River Hawks with five points in a game that marked their first conference win of the season and their first overtime victory since 2017.
This result is significant for UMass Lowell as it ends a stretch without conference wins and shows improvement in close contests. The match was tightly contested throughout, with both teams exchanging leads and defensive stops proving crucial.
In overtime, freshman Brienne Brezynskie caused a turnover early in the period, and goalkeeper Lauren Lorentzen made a key save before Brezynskie assisted redshirt freshman Chiara Pompei for the winning goal with just over a minute left. Head Coach Lisa Miller said, “It was back and forth the whole way. It was close game. It’s what conference games should be. I thought it was pretty chippy early on and the referees did a good job of controlling that. We made plays when we had to, and it was a good conference game.”
Lydon finished with three goals and two assists while senior Macy Shultz added three goals of her own. Junior Bronwyn Hilbert contributed two goals and an assist, with additional scoring from Brezynskie, Pompei, senior Kaitlynn Anderson, and sophomore Georgia Ruscitti.
UMBC started strong but UMass Lowell’s defense responded by holding them scoreless for long stretches during both halves. The River Hawks overcame multiple deficits during regulation before taking their only lead late in regulation through Lydon’s third goal; UMBC tied it again to force overtime.
Looking ahead, UMass Lowell will host Dartmouth on Tuesday, April 14 at Cushing Field.
