The UMass Lowell softball team defeated George Washington, 3–2, in extra innings on March 10 at the GW Softball Field. The River Hawks scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning and held off a late rally to secure the win.
This victory is significant for UMass Lowell as it improves their record to 9-7 and demonstrates their ability to perform under pressure in close games.
Head coach Jen Starek said, “Another great team win. Giana pitched really well and got us through the lineup three times, and Liv came in and closed it out for us. We played great defense behind them, and Liz Neeld has been red hot and clutch.”
Senior pitcher Giana LaCedra kept George Washington scoreless through six innings, working out of several threats with help from strong defensive plays by her teammates. Notable moments included a double play turned by Kate Hardy and Elizabeth Neeld in the fifth inning and a diving catch by Emily Baumes to end the game.
In extra innings, freshman Caroline Calkins started on second base due to tiebreaker rules. Thyanais Santiago advanced her with a bunt before Baumes drove in the first run on a fielder’s choice. Neeld then hit a two-run single to center field, giving UMass Lowell a 3–0 lead. George Washington responded with a two-run home run but could not complete the comeback.
LaCedra finished with over six scoreless innings pitched while Olivia DeCitise earned the win in relief. Offensively, Neeld led with two RBIs while Baumes added another key RBI. The River Hawks recorded four hits during the contest.
UMass Lowell will conclude its spring break trip with a doubleheader at George Mason on Wednesday.
