The UMass Lowell softball team split a doubleheader with UAlbany on April 25 at River View Field, dropping the first game 4-2 in nine innings before winning the second game 10-3.
The games were significant for both teams as they compete in the America East Conference. In the opener, sophomore Thyanais Santiago led the River Hawks offensively with two hits and two runs batted in. Junior pitcher Giana LaCedra pitched all nine innings, allowing four runs on ten hits. Despite an early lead provided by Santiago’s single, UAlbany rallied to tie and then took control in extra innings.
In the second game, junior Elizabeth Neeld had three hits including a home run and drove in two runs. Freshman Julia Rowley contributed a three-run homer as part of her four RBI performance. Junior Olivia DeCitise earned the win by pitching a complete game with six strikeouts while limiting UAlbany to three runs over eight hits.
Before play began, graduating seniors Alaina Santoli, Katelyn Fitzgerald, and Giana LaCedra were recognized for their contributions to the program.
The River Hawks are scheduled to conclude their series against UAlbany on Sunday at River View Field.
