The UMass Lowell softball team split a doubleheader against Maine on April 11, winning the first game 2-1 before dropping the second contest 2-0.
The results keep UMass Lowell at an even record for the season and in contention within their conference. The series showcases strong pitching and timely hitting, as well as areas for improvement as the team continues its campaign.
In game one, junior Olivia DeCitise led the River Hawks from the pitcher’s circle with a complete game, allowing only one hit and striking out eight batters. Sophomore Thyanais Santiago recorded three hits over both games, while junior Elizabeth Neeld delivered a crucial RBI double in the seventh inning to secure the win. Freshman Julia Rowley doubled and scored in the second inning on an RBI play by junior Isabel Quintanilla. After Maine tied it up in their half of the second inning, Neeld’s late-game double provided UMass Lowell with a lead that DeCitise protected by retiring three straight batters to close out the victory.
In game two, despite collecting seven hits—including two from Santiago—the River Hawks could not capitalize on scoring opportunities and left nine runners stranded. Maine broke through in the fourth inning after a defensive error allowed them to score twice off a single. Senior Giana LaCedra pitched all seven innings for UMass Lowell, giving up just four hits and two unearned runs.
The teams are scheduled to finish their three-game series on Sunday.
