The UMass Lowell softball team finished its regular season on May 2 with a doubleheader against Binghamton, losing both games in Vestal, New York. The River Hawks fell 2-1 in the first game and 9-1 in the second.
The games marked the end of conference play for UMass Lowell, which now looks ahead to postseason competition. The results determine their standing as they prepare for the upcoming America East Conference Tournament.
In game one, sophomore Emily Baumes led the River Hawks by going two-for-two with a double and an RBI. Junior Elizabeth Neeld contributed three hits across both games, while sophomore Avery Spinello-Branch went two-for-two with an RBI in game two. Freshman Ella Van Alstyne also had a hit and struck out four batters during her time pitching.
Senior Giana LaCedra pitched all seven innings of the opener, allowing only one earned run on five hits and striking out seven. Despite several scoring opportunities late in the game—including runners in scoring position during the seventh inning—UMass Lowell was unable to overcome Binghamton’s early lead.
In the second game, UMass Lowell took an early lead when Spinello-Branch drove in Julia Rowley after she reached base on an error and advanced around the bases. However, Binghamton responded with multiple home runs over later innings to secure victory by run rule after six frames.
With regular season play concluded, UMass Lowell will focus on preparing for next week’s America East Conference Tournament.
