The UMass Lowell men’s lacrosse team lost to Queens University of Charlotte, 8-5, in a neutral-site game on March 10. Sophomore Alex Lafreniere scored two goals and had an assist for the River Hawks, who now hold a record of 2-3 this season.

The match was marked by strong defensive play from both teams. Head Coach Drew Kelleher said, “Today I thought we played a really solid defensive game, but didn’t have our usual offensive punch. Credit to Queens who limited our early offense, but we need to get back to our identity on the offensive end. Excited to have a quick turnaround with league play starting on Saturday.”

Lafreniere has recorded multiple points in all five games this season and was one of four River Hawks players to score in the contest. Redshirt sophomore James Donnelly added two goals, while junior Colby Frigon contributed one goal and sophomore Danny Burke provided an assist. In goal, sophomore AJ True made 14 saves during his second start of the year.

The River Hawks responded quickly after Queens scored first, tying the game at 1-1 through a connection between Lafreniere and Donnelly. UMass Lowell led 3-2 after the first quarter but trailed at halftime as Queens scored three unanswered goals before the break.

Despite efforts in the second half—including another goal from Donnelly—the River Hawks could not close the gap as Queens maintained their lead through strong defense. Lafreniere’s second goal kept hopes alive in the fourth quarter, but Queens secured the win.

UMass Lowell will begin America East conference play against Binghamton Bearcats on Saturday, March 14 at Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal.
