The UMass Lowell baseball team lost to Stony Brook by a score of 11–1 in seven innings at Joe Nathan Field on May 2. The River Hawks, now with a record of 16–25, were unable to overcome the Seawolves’ early lead in their first meeting this season.
This game was important for both teams as they look to improve their standings late in the season. For UMass Lowell, the loss makes it more challenging to build momentum heading into upcoming games.
Scott Donahue recorded a hit and an RBI for the River Hawks. Sean O’Leary went two-for-four at the plate, while Brayden Cali added a hit and scored a run. Alfred Mucciarone started on the mound and pitched three innings before Josh Doney came on in relief for another two and one-third innings.
Stony Brook took an early lead by scoring in the first inning and continued adding runs throughout the game. UMass Lowell’s offense struggled against strong defensive plays from Stony Brook, leaving runners stranded several times. The Seawolves built up their advantage with additional runs in the third and fourth innings.
Donahue drove home Cali for UMass Lowell’s only run during the sixth inning after Cali singled and Carlos Martinez walked. However, Stony Brook responded with more runs late in the game, ultimately pulling away with three additional scores in the bottom of the seventh to end it at 11–1.
The River Hawks will play again against Stony Brook on Sunday, May 3 at Joe Nathan Field. The next contest is scheduled to begin at noon.
