The UMass Lowell baseball team lost to San Francisco, 8-2, in the series finale on March 9. The River Hawks managed to tie the game late before the Dons pulled ahead for the win.
This result splits the series between UMass Lowell and San Francisco, with both teams showing strong performances during their matchups. The outcome highlights the competitive nature of early-season college baseball as teams look to build momentum.
Sophomore Brayden Cali led UMass Lowell at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Freshman Cal Chance contributed with a double, a run, and an RBI. Other notable performances included junior Rowan Masse and graduate student Nicholas Solorzano each recording a hit. On the mound, freshman Colin Ducie made his first collegiate start, pitching four innings with three strikeouts while allowing just one hit and one run. Sophomore Jake Zawatsky and junior Evan Cornelius each pitched an inning with strikeouts, while freshman Tyler Dunlea made his debut by striking out two batters in one inning without giving up any hits or runs.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings as both teams’ defenses held strong. San Francisco took an early lead with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. UMass Lowell responded in the sixth when Cali doubled and was driven home by Chance’s RBI double. A sacrifice bunt from Jorge Burgos advanced Chance before Sean O’Leary’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2.
San Francisco regained control in the bottom of the sixth inning by scoring five runs to take a commanding lead. They added another run in the seventh inning to make it 8-2. Despite efforts from Cali and others late in the game, UMass Lowell could not close the gap.
Looking ahead, UMass Lowell will continue its West Coast trip by facing Sacramento State on March 10 at John Smith Field.
