Lori Trahan, a U.S. Congress member representing Massachusetts’ 3rd district, shared a series of tweets on July 4, 2025, critiquing a bill signed into law by Donald Trump. Her posts focus on debunking claims made by Trump regarding the implications of the legislation.
In one tweet, Trahan challenges Trump’s assertion that the bill eliminates taxes on tips. She clarifies that “FALSE. Under this bill, tipped workers will only be able to deduct up to $25,000 in tips, which means millions of restaurant workers, bartenders and others who depend mostly on tips will still pay billions in taxes each year.”
Another post highlights an event at the White House where Trump is signing what she refers to as his “Big, Ugly Bill.” According to Trahan’s tweet from July 4th “Donald Trump is throwing a party at the White House today as he signs his Big, Ugly Bill into law. He’ll be surrounded by Republican politicians and their billionaire donors.” She further asserts that Trump will misrepresent what the bill accomplishes.
In a third tweet posted moments later, Trahan disputes Trump’s claim about tax elimination on Social Security benefits. She points out that “Trump claims the bill eliminates tax on Social Security benefits. FALSE.” She notes that while corporate tax cuts are permanent under this legislation, it only offers a temporary deduction for some seniors until 2028.
Lori Trahan has been serving in Congress since 2019 after replacing Niki Tsongas. Born in Lowell and currently residing in Westford, Massachusetts, she graduated from Georgetown University with a BS in 1995.
