Freshman Alessandra Forgione of the UMass Lowell women’s outdoor track and field team and Jan Wouter van den Akker of the men’s team were named recipients of America East Weekly Awards, according to a March 31 announcement from the conference.

The recognition highlights notable performances by both athletes during recent competitions. These awards are given weekly to student-athletes who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in their respective events.

Forgione was selected as Female Field Athlete of the Week after making her outdoor debut at the Raleigh Relays. She broke the school record on her second career javelin throw, achieving a distance of 44.60 meters and finishing ninth among 35 competitors.

Van den Akker earned Male Track Athlete of the Week honors at the same meet by posting this season’s fastest conference time in the men’s 10,000 meters. He finished with a time of 28:57.87, placing fifteenth out of ninety-five runners.

These performances underscore both athletes’ contributions to their teams early in the outdoor season.
